Meet our Pre & Postnatal Specialists:
Kristy Powell
Kristy has been teaching Pilates for fifteen years after having completed a rigorous two-year classical Pilates certification, rich in anatomy and bio-mechanical mindfulness. Since then, she has facilitated multiple full-apparatus and Mat instructor certification programs, educating classical Pilates instructors who now teach both regionally around the northeast and internationally. Additionally, she has pursued various opportunities for continuing education to deepen her specialization in pelvic-floor rehabilitation and the pre-natal and post-partum body.
As an extension of her passion for women and persons giving birth, and her investment in the wellness of pre-natal and post-partum persons, Kristy became a certified birth doula and has supported many families through the whole of the pre-natal, birth, and post-partum journey.
Kristy holds a profound reverence for both the space she shares with her clients and her clients’ dedication and commitment to their personal wellness. Kristy particularly appreciates the therapeutic aspects of Pilates (she holds a Master of Counseling). She intimately knows the ways in which Pilates meets a body where it is at, always providing room for growth, healing, and transformation.
Katrina Hawley
Katrina is from Wyoming where the untamed spirit of the West and majestic natural beauty open your mind and invigorate your senses to release your own inner freedom and sense of adventure.
When Katrina moved to the Five College area, she brought with her this sense of freedom and adventure, along with her compulsion to teach. When she discovered Laban Movement Analysis, it gave her the language she needed to understand movement at a deeper level and a way to communicate with those who would become teachers themselves.
Katrina's superpowers are movement, teaching, and collaboration. She has collaborated with other professionals to teach how movement integrates with healing, communication, self-esteem, and empowerment. Katrina believes that relationships come first, business comes second, and play is the best!
Katrina is a Certified Pilates Teacher by the Pilates Method Alliance and a graduate of the Polestar Pilates Rehabilitation Program. She studied Somatic Movement approaches under Janis Pforsich, Aliza Shapiro, Charlotte Wile, Irene Dowd and Martha Eddy.
Katrina teaches Laban Movement Analysis, Issues in Pedagogy, and Pilates at the University of Hartford’s Hartt School in the Dance Division.
I started doing Pilates at the beginning of my 2nd Trimester. Friends told me how much Pilates helped them so even though I was exhausted I wanted to give it a try. I loved it from day 1! It was the perfect way to exercise given how low my energy was. Kristy developed a great program for me. I've always struggled with what I call a "sway back" and I was worried about my belly getting bigger and putting a lot of strain in my low back. The Pilates exercises transformed the way I stand! A surprise benefit was that Kristy was able to help me with chronic knee pain I've had since spraining my ankle many years ago. I feel more balanced and comfortable walking and standing for long periods of time! I can't wait continue working with Kristy after the baby is born.
I started Pilates not long after I found out I was pregnant- I had been planning on it before but could never seem to find the time. I'm so glad I did! Pilates is by far my most favorite type of exercise. I actually look forward to going (rather than looking forward to be done). The instructors at The Pilates Studio adapted and challenged me appropriatly has my belly grew and body changed. I was doing session up until 3 days before I went into labor! My OBGYN even allowed me to return to Pilates before 6weeks postpartum because she knows and trusts these instructors. I safely got working on strengthening my pelvic floor. More than anything- Pilates postnatal is helping with my upper back which is so sore from breast feeding.
