Understanding Class Levels

Wondering what Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 actually mean?

Our class levels are there to help you choose a class where the pace, amount of instruction, and movement challenges are a good fit for you. As the level increases, the exercises generally become more complex—but that’s only part of the difference.

The levels aren't a ranking, and moving up isn't necessarily the goal. They're simply different class experiences.

In a Level 1 class, your teacher spends more time explaining how to set up an exercise, what you're trying to accomplish, where you might feel the work, and how to make adjustments.

As you move into Levels 2 and 3, classes tend to flow more continuously. Your teacher can spend less time explaining the basics because you'll be expected to recognize familiar setups, understand common cues, and make more decisions about your own movement.

An experienced client might regularly choose a Level 1 class because they prefer the pace, want more time to focus on fundamentals, or because that class fits their schedule. And someone who is new to Pilates but is healthy, physically active, body-aware, and comfortable learning in a group may find that they're ready for Level 2 fairly quickly.

Class Levels

Use the guidelines below to help choose where to start. You don't need to check every box, and there will always be exceptions. If you're unsure, ask your teacher or contact us at Office@ThePilatesStudioInHadley.com.

  • Level 1

  • Level 2

  • Level 3

Level 1

More explanation. More time to learn. A slower pace.

Level 1 is a great starting point for anyone new to Pilates—or to exercise and movement in general. These classes introduce Pilates fundamentals, common alignment cues, equipment setup, and the movement skills you'll use throughout our other classes.

The exercises can still be challenging. The difference is that your teacher will spend more time teaching the how and why behind what you're doing.

Consider Level 1 if you:

  • Are new to Pilates or haven't exercised regularly in a while.
  • Prefer a slower pace with more explanation and guidance from your teacher.
  • Are still learning common Pilates positions, terminology, and equipment setups.
  • Are learning how to stabilize one part of your body while moving another.
  • Want more time to understand where you should feel an exercise and how to adjust it.
  • Have physical limitations that require more time and attention when making modifications.

Already experienced? You're still welcome in Level 1. Going to a lower-level class doesn't mean taking an easier class. It may simply give you more time to work on precision, fundamentals, or a particular movement—and sometimes it's simply the class time that works best for your schedule.

So, Which Level Should I Take?

Think about more than how strong or fit you are.

Your best level depends on your Pilates experience, body awareness, familiarity with the equipment, ability to follow verbal cues, comfort modifying for yourself, and how much explanation you want or need from your teacher.

You also don't have to choose one level and stay there. You might take Level 2 most of the time, attend a Level 1 class on another day, and occasionally take a Level 3 class when you're ready for that particular challenge.

Choose the class experience that works for you—not the highest number you can manage.

Still unsure? Ask your teacher or email us at Office@ThePilatesStudioInHadley.com. We can help you figure out where you'll be most comfortable and successful.

Flexibility and Motion:

Mat exercises incorporate dynamic stretching that target various muscle groups.  Over time, you'll notice increased suppleness in your muscles and joints, allowing for a wider range of motion in daily activities and reducing the risk of strains or injuries.

Balance and Coordination:

Many Mat exercises require precise control and stabilization, improving your balance over time. These newfound skills translate into improved coordination, making everyday activities more graceful and reducing the risk of falls and other injuries.

Mind-Body Bliss:

Beyond physical gains, Pilates workouts cultivate well-being benefits, including reduced stress and increased cognitive function, for  an all-encompassing feel-good experience.

Increased Body Awareness:

As you learn to execute exercises with proper form and alignment, you'll become more attuned to your body. This heightened body awareness extends beyond the mat, impacting how you sit, stand, and move in your daily life.

Smiles & Success: Client Reviews That Say It All:

My balance as definitely improved since I have been doing pilates at the Pilates Studio. I know this because the split leg work I do on the reformer on the floor. I do not shake or feel imbalanced as I did two years ago… I also see balance improvement with the arm work I do on the spring board… particularly the lunge….I am stable. I so appreciate Pilates as does my body… Thank you!

If you think Pilates is just about abs, you are missing out on so much. The Pilates experience I've had at the Pilates Studio in Hadley is more like whole body wellness and like a form of physical therapy for any age. It's safer than yoga for the body and is making my body stronger and safer in all the activities of life. I kept getting injured with yoga even though I like it. Pilates has been a big help for me - with strength, balance, healing. It has magically helped me improve with dancing and coordination. The teachers at the studio are top-notch. Wow. I love the mat classes and apparatus classes. I like the variety of what they offer.
